About Our Residential Program

Energize NY Residential currently serves communities and homeowners within the Northern Westchester Energy Action Consortium (NWEAC).  The program provides residents of 1-4 family homes with direct support, useful information and innovative tools to make better energy efficiency choices.  Energize NY Residential works with municipalities and local community-based organizations to build trust among homeowners and spread the message and benefits of energy efficiency.  Using these and other techniques the program has successfully increased adoption of whole house energy efficiency upgrades in the "Home Performance with ENERGY STAR" program threefold since 2011.  Energize innovations and the program's performance have been recognized by municipalities, energy efficiency contractors, program managers and experts across New York State.  The EIC hopes to expand the Energize NY Residential program beyond the 14 NWEAC communities as additional funding becomes available.

The idea behind a community-based energy efficiency program was initially conceived by a small group a northern Westchester County residents and local officials in 2009.  That vision was organized through the Bedford Energy Advisory Panel, Bedford 2020 Coalition and the Northern Westchester Energy Action Consortium.  Funding for the initial program was secured through the awarding of competitive DOE and NYSERDA grants in 2010.  A handful of key stakeholder representatives worked for months to develop and submit the grant proposal as a joint effort of NWEAC and the Town of Bedford.  Using those funds a pilot program, Energize Bedford, was launched in January 2011.  Roll out to all 14 NWEAC communities began in late 2011 and was completed by the end of 2012.
